Nigeria’s IGP Has Reportedly Approved Fresh Investigation Into Late Mohbad’s Death

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, says a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is already underway after the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reportedly approved its petition.

The family made this known through its lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026, following reports that a separate case before the Federal High Court in Abuja had recently been dismissed.

According to Ogungbe, the Aloba family submitted a petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, which was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7. The petition raised concerns about alleged inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and called for a fresh, comprehensive forensic examination of the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

The lawyer said the IGP subsequently approved the petition and directed that it be forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action. The matter was later assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.

Ogungbe explained that a representative of the Aloba family has already met with the new team of investigators and that the family has remained actively involved in following up on the process.

The clarification came after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/363/2026 on September 25, 2026.

However, Ogungbe stressed that the dismissed suit was completely separate from the family’s petition to the police. He said the suit was neither filed by the Aloba family nor brought with its knowledge, authority or consent.

The family is therefore urging the police to approach the new investigation with diligence, independence and professionalism, while thoroughly examining all relevant individuals, evidence and circumstances connected to Mohbad’s death.
