Tonto Dikeh Opens Up About Her Past Drug Addiction, Advises Young People

Popular Nigerian actress-turned-evangelist, Tonto Dikeh, has opened up about a difficult chapter of her past, revealing that she once battled drug addiction and the emotional pain that came with it.
In a heartfelt reflection, the actress spoke about the turmoil, self-destruction and inner struggles she experienced during her battle with substance abuse, urging young people to stay far away from drugs.
Looking back, Tonto said the controversial and chaotic image many people associated with her at the time did not tell the full story. Beneath the anger, reckless decisions and public outbursts, she said, was a deeply wounded person desperately crying out for help.
“I was once the chaos people judged. The noise. The mess. The broken decisions. But what many didn’t see was the truth behind it all. Behind the anger, the addiction, the self-destruction, was a soul screaming for help, not attention. I was desperate for relief, for peace, for someone to see past my actions and hear my cry.
“Drugs weren’t the problem; they were the symptom. Addiction wasn’t my identity; it was my escape from pain I didn’t know how to name. And yet, God heard the cries I couldn’t articulate.
“When people saw chaos, Heaven saw a wounded soul worth rescuing. When I was written off, God was writing a comeback.”
Tonto credited her Christian faith with helping her break free from addiction and discover a renewed sense of purpose.
For her, the experience has also reshaped the way she views people battling substance abuse. She stressed that addiction should not be seen as the end of a person’s story, encouraging society to look beyond destructive behaviour and recognise the human being—and often the pain—behind the addiction.
Her message to young people is clear: drugs may appear to offer an escape, but they can deepen the very pain a person is trying to run from.
