Magixx Shares When A Nigerian Artiste Can Make Serious Money

Being signed to a major record label doesn’t automatically mean the money starts rolling in. Afrobeats singer Magixx knows this all too well, as he has opened up about the financial struggles he experienced even after joining Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records.

Speaking on an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the singer explained that making serious money in the Nigerian music industry often goes beyond securing a record deal. According to him, an artiste needs a hit song with international appeal to unlock the kind of financial success many people associate with stardom.

But getting that first hit is only part of the journey. Magixx noted that staying financially comfortable requires artistes to consistently release successful records, as their earning potential often depends on how many hit songs they have under their belt.

Interestingly, the singer revealed that despite being signed to one of Nigeria’s biggest record labels, it took him between two and three months before he started earning money from music.

During that period, he was still battling everyday financial responsibilities, including bills and family needs.

Magixx also recalled how people’s perception of his record deal made things even more complicated. Whenever he considered asking for financial help, people would assume that being signed to Mavin Records meant he was already swimming in money.

As if that wasn’t enough, he also had the pressure of looking the part. According to the singer, maintaining the lifestyle and appearance expected of a superstar, including wearing expensive designer outfits, wasn’t exactly easy when the money hadn’t started coming in.

He further pointed out that even performance fees in the music industry are influenced by an artiste’s catalogue of hit songs.

Thankfully, things eventually took a positive turn, and the money began to come in.

Magixx’s experience offers a glimpse into a side of the music industry fans don’t always get to see: behind the fame, designer outfits and record label deals, artistes may still have to deal with financial pressure while working to establish themselves.
